The best way to find out if your insurance covers acupuncture is to call your carrier. Here’s a list of questions to ask so you can know exactly what to expect. If you have an HR department, they can be of help, also.

  • Does my plan cover acupuncture? If so, do I also have out-of-network benefits?

  • How many visits?

  • If the number of visits is limited, are they combined with any other treatments (like chiropractic, PT, etc)?

  • Do I have a deductible? If so, how much have I met?

  • What’s my copay/coinsurance?

  • What’s covered? (For example, some plans only cover pain, & some only cover anesthesia). It’s helpful if they can direct you to a list of what’s covered so you can determine if your condition meets their criteria.

  • Ask for the name for the person who assisted you, as well as a reference number.
